Hay is a MUST I repeat this ... Hay is a must! The Piggies eat very large quantities every day and it helps them to have a healthy digestive system. They are constantly nibbling hay than is required to keep their teeth ground down, preventing it to grow too long.
You can buy a good quality hay either by a farmer or pet store. It is important to check that it is NOT hay and straw, as they are used as bedding for and offer no nutritional value. Timothy Hay Fresh herbs Alfafa hay are usually used to feed baby guinea pigs or pregnant sow, because it is rich in protein, calcium and carbohydrates. Fully grown pigs do not benefit from them because they for stones or disease due alfafa are vulnerable too rich in calcium.
For my piggy, I get Excel Herbage Timothy Hay, how to eat it and if I try an alternative to them, they will completely ignore it love (yes pigs picky I know!). Since Timothy Hay expensive, I only use them for their hay rack, and buy a cheaper big bag of normal hay for their bedding.
Dandelion is their favorite plant can be found in every garden because they are wild plants, giving a handful of hay each day.
And finally, last but not least - water! Bottle of water in the cage must be made available at any time guinea pigs eat. Clean and rinse the bottle of old stale water before refilling. They have a nasty habit of blowing leftover food from their mouths sprout in the water and making the water dirty.
Over time, algae inside the bottle so you use a brush to clean the bottle inside. If you do not have a brush, I've heard of an alternative that drained to 1cm of water in the bottle and a spoon of rice and then shake the bottle and pour into a sieve.
Do not use a water bowl, they will use the bowl over, soaking the cabin floor as a toilet pigs or advice. I hope this page has helped you to understand what guinea pig food is good for them and what is not....
