Harvester ants for your Horny Toad

Harvester ants are a necessary food for most horned lizard. They can be bought from online sources, or you can catch your own. I have desert horned lizard holder known to catch their own, but most (including myself) prefer to buy them.

They send most of the providers in a box with a vented lid that can be easily stored. Once you feed them home and soak. Then the best way to keep them is in the door of the refrigerator at 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit. This keeps them asleep in hibernation and they remain alive in this state up to 3 months. Do not get the temperature below 40 degrees, or they will die.

The great thing about this technique is that you can shake a few at a time into the Horny Toad habitat without risking a painful bite. They are also much easier to dust when you do not fight to keep them in your pocket. As in the living room they start to warm up and shake the ants move. This signals the horned lizards, it's time to have dinner and the movement encourages them to eat.

If they all have devoured in a few minutes and are looking for more, just shake a few more in. Just not too many in at a time because they attack and even kill Horny Toad. If a horned lizard he is attacked in his natural habitat easily overtaken the ants, but in a case he can not do.

An adult desert horned lizard eat ants harvest 30-60 3 times per week. I like to wake up the ants and warm every 10 days or so. I feed them and give them water to make them nutritious and hydrated for the lizards.

Harvester ants feed bits dark leafy greens, vegetables and small pieces of fruit. Do small amounts at a time and give the ants a chance to eat it all. When you return to the refrigerator with food remains in the container it spoil, mold, and kill the ants.

After seeing to their needs and that they are still alive, just put them back in the refrigerator....
