Leopard gecko life - Tips for extending the life of leopard geckos extension

Leopard geckos are one of the most frequently chosen among reptile pets considered, since they are small, easy to keep, appear in varieties of color and design, compared cheaper than other reptiles available in pet stores and can get used to the handling. 

The geckos are sold under the few reptiles that are bred in captivity as pets. The average lifespan leopard gecko is seen in 10-20 years. However, their life expectancy vary differently from those who survived compared raised in the external environment (20 years) as opposed to those in captivity (10-15 years). Here are some important tips that every leopard gecko owners and fans will know, should extend to the lives of their pets: 

1 Check your dog's diet. Most leopard gecko eats live insects such as crickets, locusts and mealworms. Since they live those safekeeping and storage of these insects, they prefer to keep them healthy and alive should be a priority. Once in a while to treat them by other, more expensive insects like butter worms, silk worms, and wax worms. There should also be an ample amount of water source for your pets. 


2 For good food supplement. Since some insects do not contain the required nutritional value, vitamins and calcium should to be given to your pets. There are calcium powder in pet stores, you can dust off your pets on the food you feed them. However, be careful, because the administration of large doses can be dangerous. 

3 Keep a sufficient and adaptive environment. Most geckos are found in dry, rocky and tropical landscapes. This should be replicated in their shelter as cages, tanks or aquariums. First, sand or other particulate substrates were used to cover the grounds. However, these materials cause impactions. 

Substrates that would be considered safe to use newspaper, paper towels and wood chips. In addition, since leopard geckos are cold blooded and needs external heating, their tanks should be provided with several skins (warm, cool and moist). The various membranes in maintaining the temperature requirements to support these reptiles. You can change whenever they particularly need hidden hot or cold environment during shedding and egg laying. 

4 Lessen the danger of stress. The presence of other leopard gecko at the shelter tends to increase the problem of stress and territorial disputes. These shelters should be large enough, especially if you plan to put in a tank in two or more. 

An average of 20 gallons should be the ideal size for a tank for two geckos and another 10 gallons per gecko should be maintained. Housing male and female gecko together should also be monitored. As the males tend to be sexually aggressive than females during the breeding, housing should be created to separate the males from the females. 

The life expectancy of leopard geckos depending on how it interacts with its environment dependent. Those that are kept in captivity can live longer than their outdoor counterparts, if given the proper care, nutrition and atmosphere.
