Leopard gecko sand substrate is up to now still in dispute among lizard holder. Some have sand as a substrate for geckos while others claimed that nothing the benefits of calcium sand hit it.
As a newbie in this hobby, it's hard to tell which of them is correct. In my opinion, sand and calcium sands are two different things. Regular sand, which can be bought on the market, contains tiny pieces of insoluble minerals such as rocks and when ingested they can cause impaction of geckos. It is a fact indeed that geckos natural habitat from the dessert part of the world. Although it is better geckos in a housing that mimics their natural habitat to place it does not necessarily mean that regular sand are used. Regular sand is so different from the natural sand found in the desert.
Although some pet owners paper towels or newspaper in cages that uses it remarkably easier for them, no geckos drop their tails, it is also rather acceptable, but calcium sand are perfect a better choice than the lower substrate in your gecko cage.
Many may disagree with this information, but it certainly has in my leopard gecko. To ensure that your gecko does not have impaction problem, you can monitor their calcium intake sand. Minimal consumption of it is acceptable to simply ignore your gecko absorb too much to avoid impaction. However, if you suspect any problem even the smallest characters, it is better to change substrate and ask your vet just in case.
