Sometimes in dog training, there are methods that are tried and true. We use them because they work. We recommend them without even having to think about ... and rightly so. I'm sure by now you've heard all about pinching the commonly prescribed solution Puppies: Just say a quick "ouch" and the puppy is off. Let me say first that this technique will not be wrong. It works. Many puppies are her teeth away from the skin after only a few repetitions of "ouch" cue.
But what about the others? You have met them. I'm sure some of you also own them. Instead of "milk teeth" your puppy has been blessed with small daggers of doom. And he wants to use them. If you are an "Ouch," he laughs offer, then provides you with a solid backhand in the face, but not before ripping your favorite jeans to shreds. In fact, the "ouch" seems to be off his mood into high gear. Now he is not only trapped, but he is also jumping, towing, barking and tearing around the living room. The well-meaning advice of your coach now seems like a kind of April Fool's Day.
So what do you do? Let's start back at the beginning where things started to go wrong.
Ouch must be followed by a sequence The whole point with your puppy a kind of hint that he is biting too hard when it really should be a warning that he be there the opportunity to play with you meant. Most of the time puppy nipping intense when your game is intense. His excitement level is so high that he does not seem to bring myself back to earth. Think two year old on Halloween. So, by simply using the word "ouch", then resuming play, you missed the most important component. The word "ouch" should always be followed by removal of the game! Your puppy needs to learn that every time his teeth touch skin, it "ouch" hears the word, and then (gasp) he loses his game buddy! You do not have to throw him in the basement for a week ... just say "ouch", then turn it back on for five or ten seconds. If you are on the couch with him, put him on the ground. If you are in front of your bedroom, run behind the door and leave him.
Redirect him to a toy can sometimes strengthen Any good coach will teach you to have an abundance of high quality chew toys within reach at all times. If your puppy is interested in his toys, he is much less interested in your forearm. However, a lot of people accidentally bite to train their puppy to get a toy. Think about it. Your puppy bites too hard, then immediately push a toy in his mouth. The concept is there, but the timing of the call forwarding is deactivated. Instead of immediately grabbed him a toy when he bites, do more prevention. Take your puppy nip want to come prepared with a toy before he does. Get into the habit of playing with a toy as a rule of thumb, rather poorly on the toy if it got previously. Are you still there? Moving on.
Him more downtime Think before because two paragraphs, when I was talking about a puppy level of excitement? What I see more and more that puppies are overstimulated in today's culture. Between daycare, dog walks, Kong, Puppy class (good choice), and play groups are literally exhausted our puppies. You rarely get a chance to actually sleep ... and I mean proper REM sleep, not just resting beside us on the couch. The result is that our puppies become more rambunctious than usual. Re-think two year olds on Halloween.
A tired dog is not always a good dog ... sometimes it is a figment of Satan. So, here is my suggestion for you. Give him two "ouch" it in a row, and if it continues, give him a break. By constantly yelled at him, you're just feeding the beast, which aroused him more and more. When you say your puppy has passed the point of no return and he's just out of control, quietly put him in his crate. He probably just needs a nap. Leave it there for a good half hour to an hour and you will be amazed at the difference.
Give a few of these simple changes a try and let me know how it goes. If your puppy is something like half of the puppies I meet, you will find it makes a difference within the first few days. Keep the faith! Danielle Hodges, CPDT-KA
