Caring for your newly adopted guinea pigs

 Small, cute, adorable - it's easy to see why guinea pigs make appealing family dogs as you munch hay and vegetables to see, play peek-a-boo and dance around her cage makes you happy gweeking sounds in your local pet shop. Often regarded as a child's pet, it is believed that guinea pigs are stupid and need little care, labor and foresight. You could not be more wrong. 

So if you're considering a guinea pig as a pet, you need to know? A guinea pig, also known as guinea pig is not a pet that you bring home and forget casually. Guinea pigs can live for 7 - 10 years so if you are one to make the purchase for a child that they understand and are committed to caring for them long term or prepared to take over their care, if your child loses to the interest. 

Unlike other rodents, guinea pigs are no longer found in the wild and these social creatures deserve a good home with someone to love and care for them. 


Before bringing home your new adoptive child to an appropriate cage or hutch, to accommodate them in the right type of bedding material and have, and know what to feed them, keep them healthy and happy. It is easier to have their new home before hand set in preparation, but you can usually buy these things at the time, if you are adopting a guinea pig from a pet store. Most good pet stores are good with the items required to come for the animals they take care of the sale. 

Guinea pigs have to live as pets, so well adapted that they vocalization behavior (the famous "wheeking ') especially for their owners that was never done from their wild ancestors developed. Do not be shy, you know, when hungry, are bored or lonely. many owners to be 'hassled' by their pets' insistent call for love, attention and treats admit from the refrigerator. 

Guinea pigs respond well to routine, so try to keep the daily activities such as feeding, changing linens and refill water bottles on a regular schedule. This is a good time to socially interact and get to know each other to learn. 

These animals need exercise and activity for good health and well-being, so if you can not get a cage big enough, because the space or the budget, willing to do some daily 'out' time in the garden be your guinea pig if you have one or on the ground in a safe space. 

If you are lucky enough to have a full size cage, one that is at least 7.5 square feet of space for a guinea pig and 10.5 square meters for two. It sounds a lot I know, but there are now more storey cages available, which required up to a small footprint, but give the space and physical challenge of happy active cavies. 

Do guinea pigs have delicate constitutions so may be more prone to diseases than other pets. Most health problems can however be easily prevented by appropriate housing, loving care and a good diet. Guinea pigs are sensitive creatures so if you're an always supervise a small child when the little animal is being treated by your child want to buy. Teaching your child to properly care for their new pet guarantee a long and loving friendship.
