Choosing an Exotic Pet

The term "exotic pet" covers a pretty broad sweep of animals. For most people, it conjures up images of lions, pythons or walruses (well maybe not walruses). In practice, it is usually refers to much more tame and adaptable creatures as pets. Exotic pets offer varied and exciting alternatives to your typical household animals. Golden Retrievers and goldfish for example. Just typing those words bored me to tears.

Owning an exotic pet is not without its potential drawbacks. They often need more attention and special diets. They may need to be actively socialized or else risk a return to the wild nature. These may include aggression or self-harming behavior. This article talks about a few ways that more and more people are keeping as domesticated pets.

Kinkajou - these lovable creatures from the rainforest regions of Central and South America come from. They are closely related to raccoons and ringtails. Of all the species considered "exotic", Kinkajous are among the best suited as household companions. They are very sociable and unlike some other animals on the list, they are not prone to "wild" odors. Kinkajous are most active at night, so that they who like to party (I mean people who stay up late - not an exotic pet reference) are suitable. But be warned - Kinkajous can occasionally an aggressive strip and sometimes emit a cry or scream when excited.

Monkey - pretty much everyone knows what is a monkey. What is less well known that there are several species that can actually make for a domesticated companion. Namely spider monkeys and capuchin white - Unless you are a zookeeper in the day, you should probably stay more on the domestic life of the smaller varieties. Nothing is cuter than a baby monkey but you must be willing to see the years of hard work to celebrate the rearing and care of these animals. One of the most difficult aspects of finding monkeys belong to their specialized dietary needs that often require a lot of preparation time. They are also very attached to particular people and can negatively affect new people introduced into the budget.

Sugar Glider - nothing is higher for exotic cuteness than the tiny sugar glider. These little possums are the natives of Tasmania and parts of Australia. These animals have membranes on their toes, they can glide short distances through the air (hence the name). As the Kinkajou these bags are mainly nocturnal animals. They make great companions for people who spend a lot of time with their pets in the evening hours. An important point to mention about exotic pets is that many States have very strict laws that have the possession of many exotic species. Sugar gliders are among the most widely accepted "legal" species within the United States.

Please note that regardless of the type of pet it is very important to remember to take your own skills, dedication, and local regulations regarding the ownership of animals. The decision to own a pet is an important task and should not be entered into lightly.
