Horse Training Tips - Replace Old Habits

Often when I am asked to work with a horse, it is because the owner is having some issues. The horse is to do things that the owner not only likes, would really like to change, tried everything and still has only a temporary solution, or the horse has to override a work-around found it (to find out how to get around / find the 'fix').

The general approach to training horses is to stop the unwanted behavior. More often than not, it works. The consequences of doing that undesirable behaviors are aversive Sun the horse to stop almost immediately. Those that spring to most people, however, are a wind sucking collar and beats the horse. These are classified both as a punisher ... they punish the behavior you do not want, so that it stops.

The more behaviors that you need to turn off with Punisher / aversive, the more likely you are to shut down your horses problem solving and creative side. The horse can quickly enter a state of "learned helplessness", they have learned helpless and do nothing to tell. It is not a good place for them to be emotional, but, as handlers we tend to think this horse perfectly as 'foot'.

Habits If your horse again and again something, then we can safely call it a habit. Habits are hard to break. Have you ever tried to stop biting your nails? or quit smoking? It's pretty hard to do. There are many readily available possible solutions (which include Punisher) as foul-tasting nail paint people to stop biting their nails, or when quitting smoking pinging an elastic band on your wrist when you get a craving.

With the horses, we tend to put Penance use to stop habits that pull on reins, when they work with their head too high, she hit on the head or abdomen when they rear.But Punisher come with side effects themselves. I'm not going to list them all, I'll talk to single out just two. A couple of things can happen with the use of Penance;

if the punisher is removed, the behavior could be further The initial application of the punisher (on the head, add reins) holds the unwanted behavior. However, all we have is the horse affects behavior, we have no effect on the drive or motivation for this behavior. Why do they do it in the first place!

If we think that the behavior has stopped and we remove the punisher we may even see an allowed extinction burst where we do not see an explosion in the frequency of the behavior after a period of doing it. That is, if you see someone might bite their nails until they are just stubs and bleeding, or smoking seems to chain smoke for a certain period after the forced abstinence. Take the reins of the horse, and he sticks his nose even higher in the air. The desire seems to do the behavior have developed and set up so that when the person or animal is allowed to set what they have to pay back the deficit of the time when they were not allowed to do it built.Add the gadget does not solve the problem, it seems to have made things worse.

The Punisher did not workWhat if the Punisher does not work at all the behavior continues regardless of what we do? Or worse, what if "defend" the horse to decide? Suddenly we have no more tools in our tool box training, and we do not know what to do.

The smoker is pinging the elastic band from her wrist, but still lit a cigarette. If they have a well practiced habit or a particularly strong addiction to nicotine then punishing the desire to quit smoking will not work. The reason for this behavior has not been addressed. As with the horse, the reason for the stick their noses in the air was not addressed when the reins are added to the request, or to lift her head is just as when we started. If the urge to suck wind is strong enough, then they can also fight against the reins.

How we train without Punishers?The solution is very simple, think about what you want instead of the undesired behavior.What you want instead of nail biting, smoking, nose in the air? Once you know what kind of behavior you want instead, you now a behavior that you use to replace the old habit can. In the choice of the behavior you must also ensure that it is the underlying drive to do the behavior. A horse with a back issue or saddling problem can also raise the head or hold his head high. Can happen to make sure the horse for medical / physical / dental issues that cause the behavior as a result of pain or discomfort checked.

Once you have physical problems for the behavior strengthen you start (or reward) the horse for your desired behavior instead of the old behavior excluded.
