The Clues: Okay, that was pretty obvious: the Cat (Magenta) scratched her neck a lot. Almost constantly in fact. This caused the second clue: a huge patch of raw skin that develops into an open wound. Because she was constantly itchy, they unfortunately had blood splashes everywhere around the house (fun to clean off, let me tell you!) And thus creates the "crime scene" effect.
(By the way, if you clean your floor and walls of blood, this can be done with warm water, vinegar and a splash of tea tree oil. Use your microfiber cloth on the walls and furniture, and the usual mop on the floor. Household textiles I scrubbed with the same solution and the microfiber cloth, with a section of a sponge scourer to the difficult bit) It was a little less obvious clue in the crusts that had formed around the neck magenta (they were tiny, but many).

Eliminations: I knew that this is not a flea allergy, because I treat all my animals for fleas and worms. Personally I use Advocate. I do not really like the idea of my animals without medical reason, but if you think about intestinal worms, fleas and heartworm, the Advocate is truly the better option. With cats, make sure there on the back of the head, as they can easily reach the back of her neck and lick away the stuff that really is not good for their health.
Actions: This particular incident was of "itchy cat" to "blood everywhere" in a very short time - only about a week, in fact. So as soon as I realized that bled magenta, and why it was to the vet.
Furry or man - not with your health the health of your family through each other. If concerned seek professional medical care from your primary care physician, medical practitioner or veterinarian. In the case of cats, as soon as you notice symptoms, see your vet as they go from apparently healthy, very sick very quickly.
The vet confirmed that there are no fleas, and took a scrape to check for mites. There were no mites, he suggested it could be a food allergy - apparently cats can be allergic to certain types of foods or additives to develop their food, even if they have successfully eating it for years. This tends to as scabs around the neck area, where had to present their magenta. I bought the hypo-allergenic foods recommended and gave it a go.
A month later, and she had improved somewhat, but it was still a miracle, and she was still scratching. It got worse again towards the end of the month, so another vet visit was in order. This time, they provide a temporary relief, they got a shot of cortisone. This would hopefully give her some time to dispel the itching, because as we all know, itchy skin while it is healing! I have another bag of hypoallergenic food while I was there.
During all this time, the other cats in the house, and the Tortuga had two foster children cats displayed no symptoms at all. Magenta is not as robust as the others ...
Back to sleep at home with magenta and hopefully cure a little, I desperately searched the web to try and find some solution - I did not think the food was the question of how the month had not helped much. I finally found a pet healer website that natural foods (that would be good, I'm sure, but would need a lot of variety to make sure they got all the necessary vitamins and things) and also clean, filtered water is recommended. Mental face-palm! That was my job! This is what I did, and I had missed it!
In my defense, we only have one of those bench-top filter (we rent) and I have a dog that is between five and ten liters of water per day (drinks so we have to stop every tree on the afternoon walk), plus all the other furries. However, this looked like it could be a possible solution, so I filled the water bowl with filtered water. All animals seemed much happier, they obviously do not like the taste of chlorinated water, as much as I do. Even within a week, magenta wound had almost closed, and she was still not scratch.
It has now been two weeks, magenta, the wound closed, her fur has grown back and she looks back to normal. It does not itch much at all, and we have no more blood splatters all over the house. They also steal the other cats' food, so she's back on the "normal" food again, without side effects. All animals seem happier drinking the nicer tasting water.
Conclusion: chlorinated water causes dry, itchy skin and related problems in animals and humans. Make sure that your four-legged family get everything nice, clean, filtered water to drink. It makes it much less frustrating if you can not find the cause of the disease. I remembered nothing for granted, and to remember, my job, my own house apply. I would welcome your comments and feedback ......
