Dogs have been man's companions since early date. They still are. Dogs are our companions and working partners. They give unconditional love and affection and make our lives whole. They work side by side with us on farms and in rescue situations. They provide support for all types of people. They fight crime. They keep our feet warm at night.
What would our lives be like without them? Most of us are familiar with dogs as companions. We are growing niche to humanize them and they become part of our families. Our rational mind know that they certainly can not understand the conversation we are having with them, but the intense interest they show in our words and deeds, their presence reassuring our heart says something else entirely. To play the stupidity and the willingness and cheer us also tells us that they really have empathy for our moods.

These big brown eyes can be the reason someone with a deep depression, which makes the effort to get out of bed in the morning. The need for something more than to take care of us, an animal totally dependent on us, may be the motivation for an attempt to life again. I'm not saying that dogs are a cure for severe depression, but it can help another in taking that first step towards living room. You can not worry about the first exercise for themselves, but the dog needs a walk. Even a short walk around the block can make the difference for both of the world. A little fresh air, a little exercise takes the sheer joy your dog in your company, no matter how you feel, that can make life seem worth trying again.
Dogs are not only our companions share our daily lives. They also fill an important role as a helper. Think of all the jobs that they trained to do now. You have trained as guide dogs for many many years. The effectiveness of this work along with the companionship they offer and their willingness to work with their people has given them a wide range of jobs.
Dogs are now routinely trained to assist people in wheelchairs and with other disabilities. You can objects that get out of range, turn lights on and off, open and close doors, pick up the laundry even if you train them. Their potential for the help is only limited by their training and lack of opposable thumbs, but even that can be overcome using props for support.
I like to see people with seizure disorders if an attack comes on fascinated. Can identify some people, when they have a seizure, usually by an aura or other symptoms that then threatened the seizure and too late to do much, but you drive it off. A dog can be trained feel that aura or warning symptoms before the person does. I think the scientists found it has to do with smell, but I think it would also be to do with the human unconscious actions, how they move, breathe, blink event. Sensing an oncoming seizure, the dog can alert people and give them time to get out of a dangerous place or somewhere private.
It's pretty amazing what our companion dogs can do when we take the time to train them. They are so willing to learn and want to please. So the next time you think training to sit on the ground, when he said, is too hard, Consider all the jobs dogs are able to do and spend a little more time for training. They both will not regret it.
